With heating oil prices nearly doubling, many consumers may be facing some hard choices this Winter ... Oil or Gas?

Tough times down Mexico way:
Mexican flood crisis worsening. The state of Tabasco is about 80% underwater. How does this impact your life? About 20% of Mexico's oil and gas comes from Tabasco. And the US imports 1.38 million barrels of crude oil per day from Mexico (about 14% of US total crude imports). If you include all petroleum products, that increases to 1.5 million barrels per day.

And this is just the latest bad news --
the Mexican oil and gas industry has taken some lumps lately.

We know why leaves on the trees change color. In fact, I covered that in MoneyandMarkets.com column on October 10 (I can't give you a link because the Weiss technical team has decided that our archived columns shouldn't have individual links). But why would trees evolve this ability? Here's a story that explores that question.

China is going to the moon. As in, their lunar probe is flying there right now. We could be there to greet them, but we're busy piling up our cash in the middle of the Iraqi desert and burning it.

EmperorHadrian continues his series on Rome, this time with a look at the First Punic War. That's when Rome started the long process of kicking Carthage's butt that ended with the Third Punic War. Actually, he's a bit thin on the details -- for a more in-depth treatment, READ THIS.

One final note: We're buying a new range (stove/oven). The Sears salesman told my wife that stove makers stopped including broiler pans with new stoves, because the metal is so expensive. We can mail in a certificate to get one, but it just shows how the rising prices of natural resources are affecting everyday life.
